What is ad-hoc reporting? Ad hoc reporting in SQL Server Reporting Services is the practice of giving your users the ability to create and save/deploy reports without having to write any SQL or DMX! It's that simple - your users don't have to be SQL gurus any longer - they can use the Report Builder tool that is built into SQL Server Reporting Services to drag and drop report items.

Highlights from this video:
  • An overview of the Report Model and Report Builder
  • Concepts and terms to know in ad hoc reports
  • Report Model definitions and terms
  • How Report Models can help you create an abstraction layer
and much more

This video is part of the following video series: "An Introduction to Ad Hoc Reporting, Report Models, and the Report Builder"
In the 'original' SQL Server Reporting Services (for SQL Server 2000), the only built-in tool to develop reports was the Visual Studio shell. A lot of people were intimidated by the Visual Studio and also did not appreciate having to incur extra cost just so that they develop reports. Today, Microsoft includes the Report Builder tool - a browser-delivered report building tool that any user can use.

This series is designed to help you understand what report models are and how they can be used with the Report Builder to generate and create great looking reports, all from your browser. There are pre-requisites (or post-requisites, if you prefer): this video series does not talk about security so, if you haven't already watched our videos on security, you'll want to do so before or after watching this series.
